After many years spent in an abusive relationship with her mother, Cynthia moved in with her father in hopes of some normalcy. Instead it proved to be equally frustrating, because Cynthia is incredibly self-sufficient and found she was more reliable and responsible than her own parents. “You don’t get to pick your parents,” she says. “Both my parents are good people; they’re just not great parents.”

A nasty argument became the final straw for Cynthia, and she moved out of her father’s house. She sought Bridge as a place to transition before the next step in her life. Cynthia has been

accepted to college in Kentucky for the fall semester, and will use her scholarship to study psychology and Spanish. She plans to become a family counselor, “and a bi-lingual one at that.”

Putting her tumultuous past behind her she describes Bridge as a very supportive place where people can get the necessary guidance they need. “I’m empowered now. I know my own strengths.  I’m incredibly stubborn and defiant.” She grins, “I know I am the way I am – stubborn - but I’ll do it, I’ll get there.”
